LIFE+SCREEN

Asia Pacific, 6 January 2014

Panasonic today announced at CES that this spring it will launch a new category of televisions, called ‘Life+ Screen’, which it claims represents the future of television beyond Smart TV. Panasonic has set out to completely rethink how TVs from now on should be by taking into account thoughts on how people live their lives today – and how that will change tomorrow – the changing ways we currently use large screen TVs, and the increasingly huge amounts of viewing content available via conventional broadcast, online Video on Demand (VOD) services, and User Generated content (both private and online).

Consequently, building on the success of the ‘My Home Screen’ personalisation features it introduced last year, Panasonic’s Life+ Screens completely overhaul the user interface and implement dramatic enhancements regarding learning the content preferences of individual users, breaking different content out of its silos, and making navigation far easier and more intuitive.

Unparalleled Personalization – So You Can Get To What You Want To Watch, Faster And Easier
Panasonic’s Life+ Screens get to know the preferences of individual users (or the family as a whole) and uses that knowledge to have your favorite content waiting for you as soon as you switch them on. Rather than relying solely on cumulative viewing patterns to generate recommendations, Panasonic’s new TVs are able to recognize each user individually and build up a personalized profile of their favorite content thanks to an ingenious ‘My Button’ on the remote control*. Pressing the My Button alerts the TV that you specifically like the kind of content you are currently viewing, and uses the programme metadata together with advanced algorithms to present more appropriate recommendations.

A Seamless User Interface Built Around You
The really ingenious part is how these recommended contents are then presented to the user. Panasonic has completely re-imagined how the graphic user interface for next generation home displays should be by introducing ‘My Stream’, a kind of individualized channel of content personalised just for you, seamlessly including contents from different sources. This means that recommended films and shows from cable, terrestrial broadcast, and VOD, are all presented within the same interface allowing users to simply view the content they want to see without having to worry about the source. Recorded contents, home movies, family photos, web pages, and online videos are also seamlessly included in the My Stream interface.

Voice Print Recognition And Voice Navigation
Navigation and searching for content has also become much easier. Life+ Screens use voice print recognition technology to recognize different users by the timbre of their voices alone. Accordingly navigating to your own My Stream is as simple as just saying “My Stream” to the microphone in the remote control or the microphones built-in to the TV.** Searching for content is also as simple telling the TV what you are looking for – the Life+Screen voice assistant functionality removes the need for any complicated navigation or searching.

Auto Wake And ‘Info Bar’ Notifications
In order to make Life+ Screens more than just a content viewing device, Panasonic has innovated a way for them to also become a useful everyday information displays. Life+ Screens will automatically wake from standby mode when they sense somebody nearby and display useful information graphically such as the time, date, and weather – a feature called ‘Info Bar’. Furthermore, when Life+ Screens identify the nearby user via the built-in camera, they will present further information specifically personalized to that user, such as video messages, other notifications, and recommended contents.

Outside the Living Room And Cloud Integration
Interactions with Life+ Screen are not limited to the living room. Working with Panasonic’s cloud service, ‘My Home Cloud’, Life+ Screens form a seamless network to share information and content with smartphones and PCs. For example, an online video link bookmarked at your working place would also be reflected on your Life+ Screen in the Living Room, and will display in your My Stream when you get home.

Superb Picture Quality
Panasonic has long been recognized as THE picture quality leader. Although Life+Screen’s ‘Beyond Smart’ features are not limited to only 4K TVs, combining Life+ Screen features with Panasonic’s astounding 4K picture quality takes the TV experience to a new level. All of Panasonic’s expansive experience cumulated over the years of inventing and developing plasma TVs has been incorporated into the creation of their new 4K AX800 series, which features a 4K Ultra HD panel with four times the resolution of Full-HD.A new Studio Master Color provides rich, accurate color reproduction, covering 98% of the DCI standards. Accurate color expression is also attained in low-brightness parts of the image, to produce coloring that is faithful to the original image. Remarkably high contrast from the Local Dimming Pro is achieved by precisely controlling the backlight. In addition to these functions, the 4K Fine Remaster Engine, which is a dedicated image processor, upconverts low-resolution images to allow almost all images to be viewed in stunning 4K picture quality. The result: vivid reproduction of an incredibly wide color range and a superbly high contrast to express deep, robust blacks – the two key factors which made plasma the displays with the best picture quality. This has now been combined with the high brightness of the LED panels imbuing the new AX800 series with a picture quality which surpasses any device, including plasma TVs. * Tentative.

Premium Future Design
Life+ Screens are designed to embody elegant simplicity. Articulate combinations of simple lines create a beautiful, horizontal profile. While Life+ Screens deliver the next generation TV experience and breathtaking picture, the screen itself will not obstruct the viewing scenes, blending in naturally with the living space in which it is placed.
